October 12 is the anniversary of the death of Matthew Shepard, a young man whom many believe were murdered because he was gay. Some argue that it was simply a meth-fueled robbery that turned horrifyingly violent, rather than a hate crime. In any event, his death united many people against anti-gay violence.
